About CancerEvo

Connecting evolutionary theory, mathematical models, and cancer biology.

David Basanta Gutierrez leads the CancerEvo Group within Integrated Mathematical Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

About David Basanta Gutierrez

David is a Senior Member at Moffitt Cancer Center and a Professor at the University of South Florida. His research group investigates cancer ecology and evolution through mathematical modeling and close collaborations with experimental cancer biologists.

Research perspective

Advanced cancers are heterogeneous. Their response to treatment is shaped by somatic evolution, interactions within the tumor ecosystem, and the selection imposed by therapy. The group develops mathematical and computational models to clarify these dynamics and to identify treatment strategies that may be more robust to evolutionary escape.

Collaborative science

The group works with experimental cancer biologists, including Conor Lynch on tumors in bone and Andriy Marusyk on evolution and treatment in lung and breast cancer.

Science communication

David also works with Scientists Inc, a nonprofit focused on science communication and outreach, through initiatives including the 2Scientists podcast and the Taste of Science festival.
