Debating (?) creationism. Science guy vs Ken Ham I must admit that the idea of having someone with a scientific background like Bill Nye (AKA Science Guy) debate a creationist like Ken Ham makes me rather nervous. It is not that these two people have incredible talent at what they do (popularising science in the case of Nye and superstition in the case of Ham) but I suspect that Ham is better at twisting facts than Nye is at presenting the truth. Especially given the choice of venue for the event: the Creation Musem directed by Ken Ham. Luckily those of us that want to witness the debate from a safe distance will be able to do so thanks to the free livestream from this site.
In any case expect very little from it, this is unlikely to reach people sitting in the fence between reason and fundamentalism (if such thing exists). Creationists will remain convinced of their ideas and people familiar with evolution will not change their mind as a result of a debate but from proper peer-reviewed scientific evidence which we are rather unlikely to find. The beautiful thing about science is that facts remain true even if other people do not believe in them. Negating the role of evolution will not stop tumours from evolving resistance to treatments so my colleagues and I will keep working on how to make treatments take evolution into account regardless of what Ken Ham thinks.
